This week's assignment has two parts: (1) With the background on the design of the Internet and Web, and from your learning about the HTML code suite in the lessons, discuss some main points that you learned about the Internet/Web and coding for the Web. Can you describe some features of the HTML code suite and Web "metamedia" interfaces that subsume and combine many of the principles that we have studied for semiotic systems and subsystems, data types, and digital media? What are the main design ideas behind "hyperlinking" and multimedia display interfaces?

Oh god. Oh, my head hurts. Wait… what am I, world-famous actor J.K. Simmons, doing in this dirty little hut?
Oh my god! What in the world is that?
Mmm… a great warrior, I once was. Now, but an old man I am.
…Yoda? You’re real? Why am I here?
Mmm… a long and storied career you have had, Jonathan Kimble. But for some, too long. The end of your career, the Royal Academy of Motion Pictures has commissioned!
What? That’s insane! You can’t do this!
*laughs* Oh, Jonathan Kimble. What I can and cannot do, you truly have no idea. *unsheaths lightsaber*
Noooooo!!!!!

Through this week’s lessons, it has become clearer why Pierce wanted us to understand computer systems as ‘semiotic systems’. I think it is because any other way to learn about computer systems (such as rote or mechanical learning) would not enable an accurate and comprehensive understanding of computer systems and will stunt further innovation to evolve our symbol systems. Computer systems, even with the Web, are symbol translators and messengers.
